Primers & varnishes

From the first layer to the finish.

The first and last layers of a coating system: primers for concrete and metal, anticorrosive primer-finish coatings and varnishes for resin floors. The primer decides how well the whole system bonds and lasts.

The basics

Why a primer matters

The primer is the first layer of a system: it penetrates and strengthens the substrate, binds dust and gives the next layers their grip.

For concrete, Teping® makes epoxy and polyurethane primers, including a penetrating primer, a fast-drying one and a conductive one for antistatic floors.

For metal there are anticorrosive primers, including a zinc-rich one, and primer-finish coatings combine primer and finish in one product.

Polyurethane clear coats complete the system: they protect a self-levelling floor and give it a matt or semi-matt look.

FAQ

Answers to common questions

Does a primer protect concrete from moisture?

An epoxy primer does: it forms a layer that water does not pass through. A polyurethane primer protects only partly.

Can a primer be used as the only coat?

Only temporarily: a primer is not resistant enough to abrasion.

Can the finish go on a primer that is not yet dry?

No. Wait until the primer has fully dried, otherwise the adhesion will be poor.

Why broadcast fine sand on the primer?

Sand improves adhesion and strength of the coating, and on slopes it stops the next coat from running.

Epoxy or polyurethane primer?

An epoxy primer has high adhesion and chemical resistance and penetrates deep into concrete, which makes it the usual choice for a garage floor. A polyurethane primer is more elastic and resists UV light, so it suits outdoor work, where epoxy is not recommended. An epoxy primer can be overcoated with a polyurethane paint.
