Protecting steel structures from corrosion

Anticorrosion protection is a system, not a single paint: a zinc-rich primer protects the steel, an epoxy intermediate coat builds the barrier, and a polyurethane topcoat resists sun and weather.

01Start with the environment

ISO 12944 sorts environments by corrosivity, from C1 (very low, heated interiors) to C5 (very high) and CX (extreme). The category, together with the planned service life, sets the number of coats and their thickness. Teping® EP-Coat and PU-Coat products are designed for categories C3 to C5.

02A typical three-coat system

CoatProductRoleDry film
1. PrimerTeping EP-Coat Primer Zinczinc over 85 % in the dry film protects the steel cathodically40–80 µm
2. IntermediateTeping EP-Coat Masticthick epoxy barrier with zinc phosphate150–400 µm
3. TopcoatTeping PU-Coat TopUV- and weather-resistant colour finish50–70 µm

Teping EP-Coat Primer Zinc can stay without a topcoat for up to a year. Teping EP-Coat Mastic also works on its own or as a primer. Teping PU-Coat Top goes over EP-Coat Primer, Primer Zinc or Teping PU-Coat Primer RP, and the two-component Teping PUR-Coat Top is the decorative alternative. With PU-Coat Top a 200 µm system lasts more than 25 years in C3, up to 25 years in C4 and up to 15 years in C5.

03Surface preparation

  • Degrease to degree 1 (GOST 9.402).
  • Blast-clean to Sa 2½ (ISO 8501-1) with a roughness of 30–50 µm for the zinc-rich primer: it must not be applied to smooth steel.
  • Where blasting is impossible, EP-Coat Mastic tolerates mechanical cleaning to St 2–St 3, tightly adhering rust and sound old coatings. Check compatibility with old coatings on a test area.
  • Roughen galvanised surfaces if needed.
  • Remove the dust after blasting with compressed air or a vacuum cleaner. Prime blasted steel within 24 hours.

04Conditions for application

  • Air, surface and paint from +5 to +40 °C; application down to −10 °C is allowed.
  • Relative humidity up to 85 % for the epoxy products; the moisture-curing PU-Coat Top accepts 30–98 %.
  • Surface temperature at least 3 °C above the dew point.
  • No work in winds above 10 m/s.
  • Keep the paint for 24 hours at 18–24 °C before use, especially in winter.

05Mixing and application

Stir component A, add component B in the ratio stated in the quality certificate, and let the mix stand for 15–20 minutes at +20 °C. Thin with Teping® thinner if needed: up to 5 % for airless spraying and brushing, up to 10 % for air spraying.

Drying times depend on the film thickness, temperature, humidity and ventilation: every 10 °C changes them by a factor of 2–4.
