Installing a self-levelling floor step by step

A self-levelling floor forgives little: mixing, timing and temperature decide the result. Here is the sequence for Teping Floor 205 C and Floor 205 PU S, taken from their instructions.

01Before the first kit

  • Read the instruction for every product in the system before work starts.
  • Prepare and prime the substrate: see preparing a concrete substrate.
  • Keep the kits for 24 hours at 22–25 °C. In winter the components must be no colder than +20 °C, in summer no warmer than +28 °C.
  • Make a test area of at least 2 m². Claims are not accepted without one.
  • Use kits from one batch on one area: the batch number is on the label.

02Tools

  • Mixer with up to 400 rpm and a clean bucket.
  • Notched trowel or squeegee with an adjustable gap, flat trowel.
  • Spiked roller and spiked shoes.
  • Velour roller and brush for the primer.
  • Industrial vacuum cleaner.

03Step by step

  1. Prime the substrate with Teping R 1155 Primer 100 and seal the pores with a scratch coat of Teping Floor 205 Filler.
  2. Stir component A for 2–3 minutes at up to 400 rpm and check that no sediment is left on the bottom.
  3. Keep stirring and slowly pour in component B, then mix for at least 2 more minutes. If the system uses quartz sand, add it and mix for 1–2 minutes: up to 35 % for Floor 205 C, up to 50 % for Floor 205 PU S.
  4. Pour the mix onto the floor at once: never leave it in the bucket for more than 5 minutes, the reaction heats it up.
  5. Spread it with the notched trowel, starting from the side opposite the exit.
  6. Go over it with the spiked roller to release air and even out the thickness: after 7–10 minutes for epoxy, after 5–7 minutes for polyurethane.
  7. Keep breaks under 15–20 minutes, otherwise the joint between batches will show.

Plan the size of each batch for the temperature, the pace of work and the size of the team.

05Thickness and consumption

ThicknessLoads
1.5–2 mmfoot traffic
2–3 mmindustrial vehicle traffic
3–5 mmvery heavy, intensive loads

Teping Floor 205 C is laid 1.5 to 5 mm thick, never thinner than 1.5 mm; the neat mix takes 1.5 kg/m² per millimetre. Teping Floor 205 PU S takes 1.4 kg/m² per millimetre, and a mix with sand is not laid thinner than about 2 mm. Each system page has a calculator for the area of your room.

06After pouring

  • At +20 °C you can walk on the floor after 24 hours, use it fully after 7 days, and it reaches full strength after 28 days. In the cold all of this takes longer.
  • For the first 7 days cover the floor with a colourless synthetic underlay such as geotextile. Coloured and wood-based sheets such as OSB or hardboard leave stains.
  • Walk on a fresh polyurethane floor only in soft clean shoes during the first week.

07Typical defects and their causes

  • Bubbles and craters: air not rolled out, or a cold substrate and cold components. Use the spiked roller during application.
  • Cloudy or rough spots: condensation on a substrate colder than the dew point plus 3 °C.
  • Visible joints: breaks longer than 15–20 minutes, or kits from different batches.
  • Uneven thickness and peeling: a poorly prepared or unprimed substrate.

Decorative options such as coloured flakes under a varnish are shown in the epoxy floor with flakes system.

FAQ

Questions on this topic

How long does it take to lay a self-levelling floor?

On average 2 to 5 days, including substrate preparation, the coats and curing. Add the waiting time before full service.

When can the floor be walked on and used?

At +20 °C you can walk on it after 24 hours, use it fully after 7 days, and it reaches full strength after 28 days. In the cold each step takes longer.

How thick should a self-levelling floor be?

1.5–2 mm for foot traffic, 2–3 mm for industrial vehicle traffic, 3–5 mm for very heavy loads. Teping Floor 205 C is not laid thinner than 1.5 mm: a thinner coat loses its decorative look and wear resistance.

How do I get rid of air bubbles?

Go over the fresh coat with a spiked roller: 7–10 minutes after pouring for epoxy, 5–7 minutes for polyurethane. Bubbles are more likely on a cold substrate and with cold components.

Can I lay a self-levelling floor myself?

In theory yes, but for a good result with two-component systems professionals are recommended. In any case make a test area of at least 2 m² and follow the product instruction.

Not sure which coating fits?

Describe the object, the loads and the conditions. The TNP technical team will suggest a system and send the documents.
