01The difference
| SBR | EPDM | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | granules of recycled rubber | synthetic rubber coloured throughout |
| Colour | black; coloured surfaces use a pigment | colour through the whole granule, 40 colours |
| Granule size | 1–4 mm | 1.5–3.5 mm |
| Per 10 mm of coating | 7 kg granules, 1.6 kg binder, 0.4 kg pigment | 9.5 kg granules, 1.6 kg binder |
| Coating density | from 860 kg/m³ (Sport Classic) | from 1,100 kg/m³ (Sport EPDM) |
| Price | lower | higher |
Pigment colours the surface of SBR granules, so worn areas darken over time. EPDM is the same colour throughout the granule and keeps it outdoors.
02Which coating to choose
- A budget surface where colour matters less: Teping Sport Classic made of SBR, in terracotta, green or black.
- Bright lasting colour, patterns and markings: Teping Sport EPDM.
- Colour and shock absorption at a reasonable price: the two-layer Teping Sport Combi, with an SBR lower layer and an EPDM top.
All three coatings drain water and are laid on concrete, asphalt or compacted soil with crushed stone. Bases and installation are covered in the guide on rubber granule surfaces.
03Rolls: the share of EPDM
Rolled coatings for sports halls mix the two materials in different shares. Teping Sport Roll is black SBR, Roll EPDM 15%, 30% and 50% have coloured flecks, and Roll EPDM 100% is fully coloured. The higher the EPDM share, the brighter the colour and the higher the price. All rolls are 4–12 mm thick.
04Binder
Both kinds of granules are bonded with the one-component polyurethane binder Teping AD RC. According to the Teping Sport instructions, 10 mm of coating takes 1.6 kg of binder, and the base is primed with the same binder at 0.23–0.40 kg/m² before laying.
